How to Help Homeless Dogs This Holiday Season

Posted: 11/13/2013 2:03 pm

This holiday season, my dog Sadie and I plan on being charitable to canines, both personally and by purchasing from companies that donate a portion of their sales to help homeless dogs (and people, too). We support organizations more consistently and generously during the holidays when donations often decrease and people tend to overlook pets because they are focused on their human families. Yet giving has never been easier--take a few tips for charitable pet giving from us this holiday season: (Read the full post.)

Sadie and I were so THRILLED to win the AKC Responsible Pet Citizenship Award at the DWAA Banquet in New York City in February. The article I wrote about Sadie titled "She Waits" tells about our life together and how much I love her so it was even more special that it was the article they chose to win. (Read the article at Red Room.)

Our article also won a prestigious Maxwell Award for the Best Single Internet Blog! We are just so blessed to have each other and all you dog parents out there know just what we mean. We are finishing our new book… "What Happens to Rover When the Marriage is Dog Writers Association of America Maxwell AwardOver and Other Doggone Legal Dilemmas" and apologize for taking so long! We’ve been busy at our new house in the woods, but hope to have it finished very soon.

How author Patti Lawson and her dog Sadie stay fit

"Today please welcome Patti Lawson, the author of a fantastic book, The Dog Diet. How much do I love this book! Patti's experiences are different from mine in Dieting with my Dog, yet our conclusions are the same: dogs make great weight loss buddies!" Read Patti's full interview with Peggy Frezon.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Patti Lawson, The AuthorThe winter of 2002 was the worst winter of my life. Fresh off a broken romance, I lived on ice cream, pizza and chocolate, immersing myself in a world of misery. After years of dieting, I was all dieted out, tired of my career, and in general discontent with the world. THE DOG DIET is the story of Sadie, a shelter dog who changed my life. She ran into my life, a virtual fur ball of energy and everything got better. Her joyful spirit, voracious appetite, and unconditional love, literally turned my life around.

THE BOOK IDEA

The focus in my life changed dramatically...suddenly it was not all about me...in fact during those early months nothing seemed to be about me. I could barely eat one morsel of food in my own home without this dog wanting it. No longer was I sleeping in, but getting up early to take her out. My activity level increased...my spirits lifted...my weight went down. I met new people who were also dog parents...the idea of sharing my story was born...the book began to take shape. It's a humorous account of how I changed from a stressed-out perfectionist into a more "human" being.

Sadie and PattiPUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Sadie and I developed a comfortable domestic rhythm. She got me off the couch, out of the kitchen and into the size 4 jeans I had longed to wear for years. My book, THE DOG DIET, is my personal story of how this little shelter dog made me a better person. Watch this site for developments with the book and links to my other articles.
